CONCEPTO ARTÍSTICO DE LA CUADRIENAL DE PRAGA2011

La Cuadrenial de Praga ha adoptado un nuevo nombre en la edición 2011: Cuadrienal de
Diseño y Espacio Escénico de Praga. La Cuadrienal de Praga 2011 desea presentar un
amplio espectro de disciplinas y géneros de diseño escénico contemporáneo y así
mostrar la ilimitada variedad de formas de arte y diseño escénicos. La Cuadrienal de Praga
2011 analizará el diseño escénico dentro del contexto de las tendencias contemporáneas en
el teatro, así como las tendencias de otras disciplinas artísticas y culturales relacionadas
con las artes escénicas. Planteará una reflexión sobre la escenografía como un amplio
fenómeno cultural que se manifiesta en numerosos aspectos del arte y la vida.
Se considerará a la escenografía como un campo artístico complejo, que ofrece mucho más
que la decoración del espacio para los actores. Se le examinará como un elemento
importante de toda obra escénica, como creador complejo de todos los aspectos visuales
de la escena, elementos que crean, transforman, construyen, modifican y habitan el espacio
y el cuerpo y que rigen su relación dentro de la obra escénica. Se le investigará como un
fenómeno que se manifiesta en diversas disciplinas artísticas y culturales —artes visuales,
arquitectura, diseño de moda, instalaciones, vídeo arte, nuevos medios— así como en un
arte interdisciplinario en sí mismo.
La 12a edición de la Cuadrienal de Praga desea presentar los proyectos, artistas
y expertos más innovadores en el campo del teatro y el diseño escénico, e invita a los
curadores nacionales a ayudarnos a crear un evento apasionante lleno de ideas e
instalaciones inspiradoras. El grupo central de organizadores de la Cuadrienal de Praga se
ampliará en la edición del 2011 con un equipo internacional de curadores, oficiales y expertos
que encabezarán las secciones y proyectos individuales de la Cuadrenial de Praga 2011,
y así poder mostrar una visión compleja del arte escénico, el diseño escénico y el diseño de
los espacios donde se presentan obras escénicas hoy en día.
La Cuadrienal de Praga 2011 también ofrecerá, como lo ha hecho tradicionalmente, una
introducción estimulante para público no experto -como estudiantes, niños y público en
general- que les permita profundizar en el diseño y arte escénico.
SECCIÓN DE PAÍSESY REGIONES
La sección de países y regiones, tradicionalmente la sección principal de la Cuadrienal de
Praga, será organizada por curadores nacionales que presentarán trabajos de diseño
escénico realizado en los últimos seis años en cada país y región. Como una alternativa
a los países que no participen con una exposición, se sugiere la presentación de un evento
en vivo, plática o conferencia a cargo de un representante.
Las exposiciones nacionales requieren un sólido concepto curatorial. Los curadores de
cada nación deberán definir el tema y el concepto de su exposición. El concepto deberá
representar un aspecto importante del arte y diseño escénicos en su país durante los últimos

seis años (por ejemplo: género, autor, tendencia, problema, pregunta, etc.). El concepto no
requiere ser representativo necesariamente de los aspectos más usuales del arte y diseño
escénicos de su país, sino más bien, de las tendencias más singulares, específicas
y actuales, tomando en cuenta el contexto histórico y cultural del arte escénico en su país.
Se invita a los curadores de cada país a considerar de suma importancia los siguientes tres
aspectos de su exposición: tema principal de la exposición, instalación de la exhibición
y aspectos que contextualizan su exposición.
Se invita a los curadores de cada país a usar diversas formas para presentar su trabajo:
exposiciones colectivas, exposiciones individuales dedicadas al trabajo de un sólo artista,
exposiciones/instalaciones que en sí mismas sean obras de diseño teatral, etc. También se
les alienta a enriquecer su participación incluyendo en su exposición una variedad de
las disciplinas que abordan el diseño escénico - escenografía, diseño de vestuario,
iluminación y sonido, etc., así como presentaciones en vivo.
SECCIÓN DE ESTUDIANTES
La exhibición de los estudiantes continuará según su exitoso formato tradicional. El tema
de exhibición será libre para los estudiantes de escuelas de teatro y artes visuales. Se
anima a cada país/región a presentar muestras de más de una escuela de arte.
Con el propósito de fortalecer el aspecto educativo del evento, La Cuadrienal de Praga será
acompañada, como es ya tradición, por Scenofest, proyecto educativo de la Cuadrenial de Praga
y la OISTAT (Organización Internacional de Escenógrafos, Arquitectos y Técnicos Escénicos).
Scenofest consistirá en un gran número de talleres, conferencias, presentaciones escénicas
y otros eventos para estudiantes y jóvenes profesionales del arte escénico.
SECCIÓN DE ARQUITECTURA
La Sección de Arquitectura se preguntará ¿Qué es un teatro en la actualidad? con el
objetivo de cuestionar y discutir sobre la arquitectura teatral contemporánea, cómo se exhibe
y qué tipo de experiencias genera. La sección propiciará un encuentro mundial entre
diseñadores escénicos y otros profesionales de diversas áreas que dan vida a los escenarios
teatrales, para estimular el diálogo entre la arquitectura, el diseño y las prácticas escénicas.
Cuestionará si el espacio teatral es un lugar construido con un propósito específico, un lugar
que se encuentra y se ocupa temporalmente, un mundo virtual o simplemente cualquier
espacio que se designa escénico al ser usado para presentar una obra.

Bajo la premisa de que “el espacio creado actúa,” la Comisionada de la Sección de
Arquitectura invita a los curadores de cada país a participar en este diálogo global acerca del
papel activo que desempeña el espacio en la determinación de las manifestaciones teatrales
y las culturas locales. Se hace un llamado a cada país para que reflexione sobre la pregunta
¿Qué es un teatro aquí (en un lugar en particular) y ahora (en un momento en
particular)? Se enfocarán espacios escénicos creados (construidos), aprovechados
(improvisados) o imaginados (aún por construir) en este nuevo siglo.
Nota: El trabajo presentado en las secciones puede incluir trabajos de artistas originarios del país (incluyendo
trabajos realizados en otros países), así como trabajos creados por artistas extranjeros en el país organizador.
El trabajo que se presente deberá haber sido creado en los últimos 6 años (al menos que el concepto curatorial
y el tema justifiquen lo contrario). Se puede presentar el mismo trabajo en dos exhibiciones nacionales
diferentes.
PROYECTOS
La Cuadrienal de Praga desea crear proyectos—conferencias, discusiones, presentaciones,
cursos y talleres, etc.—que atraigan a una gran diversidad de artistas, profesionales del
arte escénico, estudiantes y espectadores, para propiciar el intercambio de ideas entre
colegas, otros diseñadores, artistas y especialistas de otras áreas.
El proyecto de diseño de vestuario presentará un número limitado de vestuarios creados
bajo el tema de Materiales Extremos. Esta exhibición incluirá vestuarios que fueron usados
en una obra escénica y que están hechos de materiales inusuales y alternativos o de
materiales tradicionales con características extremas, así como vestuarios que presentan
un uso inusual/extremo del material. Se les solicita a los curadores de cada país que
propongan trabajos que puedan ser incluidos en esta exposición al curador de este proyecto.
Además de la exposiciones en las tres secciones, la Cuadrenial de Praga 2011 también
incluirá una instalación/performance titulada Intersection, un proyecto con curador e
interactivo dedicado al diseño de sonido y de iluminación. También se llevará a cabo un
proyecto enfocado en la escena y arte de Africa, y un extenso programa en vivo para
acompañar el evento compuesto de conferencias, presentaciones, discusiones, muestras
de vestuarios, encuentros y presentaciones escénicas.
Información detallada del concepto de la Cuadranial de Praga 2011 será distribuida a los curadores de cada
país por medio de circulares y se podrá descargar en www.pq.cz en la primavera de 2009.

CONCEPT

For the next edition in 2011, the PQ is taking on a new title: Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space. Prague Quadrennial 2011, aims to present a large spectrum of contemporary performance design disciplines and genres, in order to show the vast variety of forms of performance and performance design. Prague Quadrennial 2011 will examine theatre design in the context of contemporary trends in the theatre, as well as in trends in other art and cultural disciplines, working with performance to research scenography as a wider cultural phenomenon, appearing in many aspects of art and life.
Scenography will be looked at as a complex art field, providing more than decoration of space for actors. It will be examined as an important element of all performance, as a complex creator of all visual aspects of performance, elements that create, transform, construct, change, and fill the space and body and their relationship within the artistic piece, the performance. It will be researched as a phenomenon appearing in a diversity of art and cultural disciplines – visual arts, architecture, fashion, installation, video art, new media, site specific, as well as as an interdisciplinary art in itself.
The 12th edition of the Prague Quadrennial aims to present the most innovative projects, artists and experts in the field of theatre and performance design, and invites the Curators to help us shape a stimulating event full of challenging ideas and installations. The core organizational team of the Prague Quadrennial 2011, is extended by the international team of curators, commissioners and experts that will lead individual sections and projects of the PQ 2011, creating a complex view into today’s performance, performance design and spaces for performance.
Prague Quadrennial 2011 will, as it has traditionally done, provide in-depth and stimulating access to performance and performance design for non-experts as well – students, children and wider audiences.
SECTION OF COUNTRIES AND REGIONS
Section of Countries and Regions is traditionally the main section of the Prague Quadrennial and will be organized by Curators, presenting work in performance design from the individual countries and regions from the last six years.
The expositions will be expected to present a strong curatorial concept of the expositions. Curators are requested to define the theme and concept of their exposition. The concept should represent an important aspect of performance and performance design in their country or region in recent years (for instance: genre, author, trend, problem, question etc.) The concept does not have to necessarily represent the most typical aspects of performance and performance design in the country or region, but rather the most unique, specific, current trends, with consideration given to the cultural and historical contexts of performance in their country or region.
Curators are requested to consider the following three aspects when creating their exposition: the main theme of their exposition, the installation of their exhibit, and the contextual aspects of their exposition. Curators are encouraged to use variety of ways of presenting the work: group expositions, solo expositions focusing on one artist, as well as expositions/installations that are themselves scenographies or spaces of performance.
Individual expositions are also encouraged to strengthen the presentation by using a variety of different performance design disciplines and including them in the exposition – costume, stage, lighting, sound design etc., including the connections and contexts around them, as well as having live presentations in their expositions.
STUDENT SECTION
Student exhibit will again take its traditionally successful form with a free theme for students of performing arts and visual arts schools.Each country/region is encouraged to present more then one school.
In order to strengthen the educational aspect of the event, Prague Quadrennial is traditionally accompanied by Scenofest – an educational project of PQ and OISTAT (International Organization of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians). Scenofest consists of a large number of workshops, lectures, performances and other events for students and young perfroming arts professionals.
ARCHITECTURE SECTION
The Architecture Section will ask "what is a theatre now?" in order to challenge and discuss contemporary theatre architecture, and how it is experienced and exhibited. The section will provide a global gathering ground for performance designers and other professionals to meet those who make theatre spaces – strengthening the dialogue between architecture, design and performance practices. It will question whether a performance space is a purpose-built venue, a found site, a virtual world, or simply any space creatively claimed by performance.
Maintaining that “built space performs”, the Commissioner of the Architecture Section is inviting the Curators to get involved in this global dialogue on the active role environments play in shaping theatrical events and local cultures. Each country and region is asked to consider what is a theatre here (of a particular place) and now (of a particular time)? The focus will be on performance spaces that have been constructed (built), performed (improvised) or imagined (unbuilt) in this new century.
Note: Work presented in the sections can include work by artists from a particular country or region (also realized in a different country or region) and work created in the country or region presenting the work (including artists from other countries and regions). The presented work should be no older then 6 years (except if the curatorial concept and theme make this necessary).The same work can be presented in two different expositions.
PROJECTS
Prague Quadrennial further aims to create accompanying projects that will attract a large scope of performing arts professionals and experts to the PQ, including conferences, discussions, performances, and workshops, etc. It aims to provide an interactive space, with events and projects, where international performance professionals, students and spectators can meet and exchange ideas with their colleagues, designers, as well as with artists and experts from other fields.
Extreme Costume project will present a limited number of costumes with the theme of “Extreme Materials”. This exhibition will display costumes used for live performance that are made of unusual, alternative materials or traditional materials with extreme characteristics, as well as costumes made with unusual/extreme use of material. Curators are requested to propose to the curator of the project work which could be included in this exhibition.
In addition to the exhibitions in the three sections, in 2011, PQ will include a curated interactive installation/ performance – Intersection; a special project for sound and light design; as well as a Scenofest, educational project of the PQ. Additional lectures, presentations, discussions, costume shows, meetings, and performances will make for an extensive offer of live programs accompanying the event.
Detailed information about the concept and projects of the PQ 2011 as well as organizational information will be distributed to the curators in the circulated memorandums during the preparation of the event and will be available for download at www.pq.cz.
